The students will create an IOT (Internet of Things) solution for a real world problem. This project will begin in September and will wrap up in December. Over this time the students will create an IOT device that will track and monitor its surroundings. The device will be tasked with collecting data that can be used to solve an industry related problem, or streamline a process.

The students will submit the relevant data collected as well as a detailed report listing the projects challenges and solutions. The students will also present their project to the class. Partners would be invited to attend these presentations.

Project Examples

Requirements

Our students could provide many different solutions for a wide variety of companies. The primary goal of this project is to have the students collect data that could be used to develop a solution to a problem. This could include:

  • Environmental data collection
  • Customer traffic
  • Security systems
  • Utilities usage
  • Temperature changes
  • Renewable energy

The students will be required to design an Internet of Things device, create the software/firmware, and collect data regarding the task they are challenged with.

Some specific examples could include (but not limited to):

  • Customer counts (foot traffic etc.)
  • Sunlight tracking (for solar optimization)
  • Soil moisture and local weather data (fire prevention etc.)
  • GPS tracking
  • Garbage bin levels for municipalities
  • Water PH or other quality measurements
  • Home comfort sensors or smart solutions

Students are available to work in groups of one, or in larger groups depending on the scope of the project. The hours the students will spend on the project is dependent on the scope of the project as well. The students have a semester to build their IOT device, gather data, and finally create a report on their findings.

The final result of the project would be a detailed report containing the data we collect, the device schematic, and software/firmware. The students will also include revisions to the device and software, as well as describe challenges they faced and how they solved those challenges.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide feedback on the student as well as provide recommendations on future iterations of this project.

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
