The health and safety of workers is a top concern especially during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.

Under Ontario law, employers have the duty to keep workers and workplaces safe and free of hazards. The Occupational Health, Safety, and Wellness (OHSW) graduate program provides a focused developing a body of knowledge and skills in Occupational Health, Safety, and Wellness.

In teams of 4-5, students from Conestoga College will connect with your organization with the purpose of performing a practical Health and Safety related consulting project. The scope and nature of the project can vary widely and students work remotely with an organization, under the guidance of a company mentor and a faculty member. Projects can come from a wide range of settings, including industrial and manufacturing, municipal government, health care institutions, software companies, utilities, and consultancies.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, student placements will only occur virtually.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

The H&S project is delivered over 2 terms beginning in May 2022.

A Detailed project proposal with needs analysis and client agreement will be completed for August, 2022.

The development and implementation portion of the project will commence in September, 2022.

The project deliverables will vary depending on the scope of the project. Projects need to be completed by December , 2022.

Project deliverables normally include but are not limited to:

  • a presentation summarizing findings
  • 15-20 page report on key findings -students will submit a detailed report and presentation on the outcomes of the project and recommendations. This may include updated policy documents, the outline for a new program, training or other deliverables as agreed upon.

Project Examples

Requirements

Project examples include but are not limited to:

  • Remote ergonomic assessments through online communication
  • Conduct a H&S gap analysis of current procedures to ensure company legal compliance
  • Assess the design, operation of one aspect of the H&S function, recommend changes
  • Design and deliver a H&S training program (WHMIS, Ergonomics, Due Diligence, etc.)
  • Conduct a hazard analysis/ risk assessment and recommend controls to mitigate risk
  • Develop an Emergency Response Plan
  • Office ergonomic assessment (including Home offices and work from home guidance) through online interviews, checklists, and virtual assessments –recommendations on how to set up office will be provided
  • Develop Health and Safety or Ergonomic awareness training for your company
  • Develop a Stretching/Exercise program specific to the demands of your industry
  • Implement a Corporate Wellness Initiative

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Assessment/grading of final report and presentation.

Be available to attend kick-off session and the student's final presentations virtually.

Provide a dedicated contact who will act as the student's primary contact over the duration of the virtual project to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions . Students will interact virtually with their primary contact on a weekly basis, or as needed. A secondary contact should be provided as a backup.
