ethical standards and conduct communication research methodologies archival research environmental issue researchThe University College of the North invites you to collaborate with our students enrolled in the Research Methods in Aboriginal and Northern Studies 2 course. These students are learning to apply decolonized research methods to real-world environmental issues, including oral history, storytelling, photovoice, and archival research. The course also emphasizes the importance of working with Indigenous communities, ensuring that research is conducted ethically and in line with community-specific protocols.
We are seeking employers who can guide students throughout their projects, providing regular communication and feedback.
Learners
Students are expected to orally present the research project using a poster or poster presentation of research project and provide the following results:
1. Utilize a decolonized research method in a research project
2. Submit a TCPS 2: CORE certificate (https://tcps2core.ca/welcome)
3. Submit a research proposal
4. Submit a research project plan
5. Submit ethics application for proposed research project
6. Submit a draft research project report
7. Submit a final research project report, including a reflection on the decolonized method
used

Project Examples
Requirements
The following project ideas align well with the goals of this experience:
- Oral History Documentation of Environmental Changes: Students will engage with community members to document stories about local environmental changes, using ethical research practices to ensure cultural sensitivity.
- Community-Based Environmental Impact Assessment: This project will involve students assessing the environmental impact of a local development initiative, with a focus on consulting Indigenous knowledge holders and applying decolonized research methods.
- Storytelling and Land Preservation: Students will gather and analyze traditional stories about land use and preservation, connecting these narratives to modern environmental practices within the community.
- Photovoice Project on Climate Change: In this project, students will use photography to document the effects of climate change on the local environment, collaborating with Indigenous communities to develop narratives around these images.
- Archival Research on Environmental Policy: Students will examine historical environmental policies and their effects on Indigenous communities, providing recommendations based on their findings.
Additional company criteria
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Does your project involve meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities or Knowledge holders?
Does your project incorporate decolonized research methods, such as oral history, storytelling, or photovoice?
Are you prepared to offer regular guidance and feedback to students throughout the project?
Has the research project been reviewed by an IRB? Has it undergone any other ethical or legal review?
Please provide a copy of the IRB, Ethical or Review approval document. If you have no approval, the professor will work with you to obtain the necessary ethical clearance for the project.
