The final project deliverables include:

  • A report documenting the students' design solution and process.
  • A presentation of the students' findings.
  • A low-medium fidelity prototype of the design solution, as appropriate.

Project Examples

Requirements

Starting this September, a full class of engineering students specializing in various fields will spend 6,500 collective hours working in teams of 4 to solve an engineering design problem of your choice.

Based on your specific needs, and with consideration to health/safety risks and standard business practices, student-engineer groups will design solutions for your complex, open-ended engineering problem.

Project examples include, but are not limited to:

  • An exoskeleton to relieve back pain for production line workers.
  • Sensors to monitor steam traps and relay data.
  • UV water purification for developing countries.
  • Financial literacy app.
  • Landmine clearance robot.
  • Venepuncture assistive device.

Project topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Needs assessment.
  • Designing a new product.
  • Redesigning an existing product.
  • Creating a product manufacturing process outline.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for 3 design review meetings

Be available weekly for student mentoring on your business and products. This includes answering questions and providing information on your business.

Provide a dedicated contact who will be available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address student’s questions or provide additional information.
