Number of Individual Students Required: One (1)

Reporting to the Housing Services Coordinator, the Residence Program Development Assistant will research best strategies related to student engagement with the goal of developing a programming model to be used by student Residence Life Staff.

The Assistant will complete scans of institutional websites, professional association resources, and relevant research including student development theory to inform the creation of an 8-month programming plan. Concordia University of Edmonton's residence life program provides opportunities for students to connect and have fun while also engaging in meaningful personal development and community building which ultimately leads to academic success.

Typically, programming includes active planned events, drop-in activities, poster campaigns, bulletin boards, and intentional conversations.

This is an 80-hour project that will follow this approximate schedule:

2 Hours: Orientation

22 Hours: Initial Research Scan Draft

1 Hour: Initial Research Scan Discussion

40 Hours: Program Development Work

2 Hours: Program Development Proposal

10 Hours: Finalizing Program Development & Applying Feedback

3 Hours: Final Program Presentation & Wrap-Up

The project will be considered complete after 80 hours and the following deliverables will be expected:

1) Spreadsheet detailing data collected during institutional scan.

2) Spreadsheet & short report detailing data collected during student development theory scan.

3) Finalized program development proposal which, based upon completed research, outlines the following: methods of program implementation, timelines and content of student development priorities, and assessment possibilities.

The Assistant can expect a high-level of support from their supervisor including clear requirements for deliverables, scheduled check-ins, and regular availability for as-needed meetings. Most of the work will be completed independently but will be guided by specific expectations and checkpoints including the meetings as described above.

Any student who meets Riipen's eligibility criteria is welcome and encouraged to apply.

The following qualifications will help determine the selected candidate but are not required:

  1. 2-3 years of experience with residence life, student life, or other student leadership position.
  2. Knowledge of student development theory, community building principles, and/or research skills.
  3. Excellent ability to communicate (sometimes complex) concepts and processes in writing.

Mentorship

The Assistant will have access to significant online resources through professional associations and can also access the supervisor for support. The Housing Services Coordinator is happy to provide mentorship as related to the project scope through formal check-ins and regular availability for as needed touch points. Work will be reviewed at pre-determined check points and as requested by the Assistant.

Additionally, if the student has an interest in the higher education (or related) industry then the Housing Services Coordinator is happy to provide additional mentorship outside of the scope of the project.

CUE is a boutique university, small enough that every student is essential yet large enough for a global outlook. In and out of our classrooms and lecture halls, we translate what we learn into extraordinary hands-on experiences. We can sit in the back. But at CUE, someone will always invite us to the front. If we’re scientists, we can follow our curiosity into drama. A business student can graduate with a foundation in history, philosophy, and Indigenous knowledge. We can all learn new languages and traditions. We can test our ideas with people from every department and course of study, from around the world. We can try anything. We can change directions. We can be our best selves.
