The main goal for the project is to model the economic value of Downtown St. Catharines compared to the City as a Whole, Region of Niagara and other downtowns. This will involve analyzing various economic factors such as business revenue, property values, tourism, and other relevant data to create a comprehensive model of the economic impact of the downtown area.

Deliverables

Tasks for learners to complete include:

- Gathering, comparing and analyzing data on:

  • business revenue, 
  • property values, 
  • % of employment / jobs,
  • Tax revenue generated,
  • % of residential population,
  • GDP,
  • tourism statistics, and 
  • other relevant economic indicators.


- Developing a comprehensive economic model that takes into account the various factors influencing the economic value of Downtown St. Catharines.

- Creating visual representations such as graphs and charts to illustrate the economic model and its findings.

- Writing a detailed report explaining the methodology, findings, and implications of the economic model.

Mentorship

The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Director and will be provided with the following resources: 


  • Weekly 1:1 Meetings with the ED throughout the life of the project. These can range from 30 minute to 1.5 hour meetings.
  • Limited access to the SCDA Google Workspace throughout the life of the project (e.g., access to the Project Folder - Economic Development\Value Modeling which include tools such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.).
  • Professional development which will be coordinated through the ED. This may include cross-departmental webinars/workshops, networking, and reference(s)
  • A tutorial on accessing and extracting open source data provided by the Streetscape and Sustainability department.

The St. Catharines Downtown Association (SCDA) is a non-profit organization that represents approximately 700 members including commercial property owners, retailers, restaurants and professional offices in the designated BIA (Business Improvement Area).

The mandate of the St. Catharines Downtown Association includes participating in programs aimed at the physical improvement and beautification of the core, as well as the promotion of the Downtown as a great place in which to shop, work, dine, play, meet, live and explore.
