Details

Locate and analyze urban-level violent crime data across the globe

Criminal victimization research is generally undermined by the limited availability and quality of crime data. This is particularly true in international comparative analyses. Major challenges include language ambiguity and legal difference between nations, quality of reporting and data capture rates (aka: data represents X% of total incidents), spatial and temporal inconsistencies, etc.

Safe-esteem has developed several solutions and approaches to overcome these challenges, and the outcomes are already in use across our platforms. This project will directly contribute to a new, forthcoming global crime risk index. Students will have the unique opportunity to help shape the index content and understand how to identify and resolve some of the limitations of legacy risk measurement and communication methods.

Deliverables
  • Locate and access open and proprietary data sources and related analyses of crime and risk data at the global, national, regional, and city levels.
  • Review national legal frameworks (code) and law enforcement reporting practices to identify specific crime naming conventions and classes.
  • Identify and engage Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across government and academia (where applicable) to obtain data, elicit opinions, and generate estimates.
  • Document the process, primary sources, and key findings.
Mentorship

Student(s) will receive initial and ongoing training and education on the full spectrum of the requirements. Specifically:

  • Min. of two-hour introductory training and legacy crime risk measurement practices, known limitations, and fallacies.
  • Access to existing (current, real-world) data sources and methods for specific geographies (which they will have to emulate and expand to new geographies.)
  • Direct access to the full team (includes company CEO, senior intelligence analysts, software engineers, data scientists, etc.)
  • Minimum of weekly progress reviews and problem-resolution sessions.
