Experiential Learning Community Engaged Learning at MacEwan University is a project-based teaching-learning strategy that connects classroom theory to challenges experienced in the “real world” by our Community Partners. Free Partnership Opportunity- Research and innovative communication project focused on Priority Populations (Example: Indigenous Peoples, LGBTQ+ Communities, Immigrants and Refugees, Homeless, Women and Children, etc.) and Public Health Priorities such as Food Security, Gender equality, Climate change, Gender-based violence, Human trafficking, Opioid crisis, Safe and clean water, Mental health, Emergency preparedness, etc. We’re looking for community partners interested in working with our senior nursing students (4th year) to evaluate existing interventions and services pertaining to a priority population, ultimately aiming to create innovative and evidence-based communication strategies, programs, or services that are sustainable and socially, and ecologically oriented and aim to promote health equity and equality in priority populations. Challenge statement 


Students will apply resilience using a socioecological approach and systems thinking (concepts and theory) during this project while also developing and engaging in Evaluating public policy, public health policy, and public health interventions and programs relevant to priority populations.


The major learning outcomes of this project include(course learning outcomes translated to plain/business language) :

  • Explain the links between sustainable development, emerging public and global health challenges, and resilience in priority populations, 
  • Analyze the roles of the Registered Nurse within interprofessional and intersectoral collaborative practice,
  • Create innovative, evidence-informed social media and communication strategies that target multidisciplinary stakeholders and promote health equity and equality in priority populations.

Requirements

The emphasis of these projects is for students to experience how their course theories are applied within workplace settings and/or addressing industry challenges. There could be a variety of projects that achieve this.


As a guide to consider what projects your organization would be interested in submitting, below are some examples of potential projects:

Each community partner will receive a final project package (situational assessment/ system analysis/mapping), including a communication strategy tool. These communication artifacts will vary depending on the intended audience and purpose of the communication but could be: ● Aninfographic ● Social media strategy/ communication campaign ● Caseforsupport (for advocacy or funding leverage) ● Videoclip/ digital tools/video promotion ● Webpage/Google Site ● Toolkit ● Content and design for APP Howthis works Student teams will choose a community partner (CP) at the beginning of the winter term. With the help of the CP, the team will explore an agreed-upon public health issue through the lens of a specific priority population, coming up with a project plan to engage other stakeholders to build a clear picture of the needs and opportunities for addressing the health issue.

Community Partners will provide a dedicated supervisor for the student or team of students on this project.

The supervisor will provide ongoing communication, project direction, and feedback, including feedback at the midway and end point of the project
