Student Profile: Students in this course are in their 3rd or 4th year of Design program. These students can be expected to have an advanced understanding in this project area.


Skills already have and skills to be developed:

  • Communication: Written skills demonstrated in rationales and requirements documentation. Verbal skills when presenting your work during interim and final critiques.
  • Professionalism: Active participation in critiques and meeting of deadlines. In addition, for design students:
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Working in teams of 4 as well as with a community partner and their specific needs

Expected outcomes and deliverables
  • Analyze a complex project brief
  • Utilize HTML/CSS frameworks to create web pages more efficiently
  • Understand how a Content Management Systems (CMS) is used to deliver a website
  • Create a website using a Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Acquire hands-on experience and practical know how in working with a community partner
  • In addition, for design students: Demonstrate control of typography, design elements and principles


In Project 1, Students will work to understand their goals and needs for a website, and design a solution that improves their web presence.


For Project 2, groups will then work with the High-Fidelity mockup their group created in Project 1 to develop a functioning website for the

Excel Society (excelsociety.org) on Webflow.

Project Examples

Requirements

The emphasis of these projects is for students to experience how their course theories are applied within workplace settings and/or addressing industry challenges.


Project 1

• A project proposal

• An improved sitemap and notes on your research/observations

• Mid-fidelity wireframes of key pages

• Mockups and a style guide for the website

• A presentation (15 mins) to the client of your mockups and process


Project 2

• A development project plan, outlining group roles and timelines

• Developed pages in Webflow (minimum 15 pages) that reflect the

designs in your high-fidelity mockup

• A client training video explaining how to update their new website

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Community Partners will provide a dedicated supervisor for the student or team of students on this project.

The supervisor will provide ongoing communication, project direction, and feedback, including feedback at the midway and end point of the project
