translation communication proof reading transcreations localizersThis work placement offers an introduction to real-life translation situations in the setting of a Language Service Provider (LSP). It constitutes a structured period of work-based learning which has been shown to help postgraduate students develop a wide range of generic work-related skills such as problem-solving, analytical and critical thinking, team working, communication skills, personal development skills, planning, and organizational skills, etc. In addition, students are given the opportunity to develop their professional competence as translators (and by extension as proof-readers, revisers, editors, project managers, etc.) in a working environment, benefiting from mentoring and support from experienced professionals.
Students are available for up to 100 hours starting early Mid March, 2021 – January, 2022.
Unpaid for credit experience. Honorariums and Stipends welcome.
Learners
The final deliverable will vary depending on the scope of the project. Students need to complete 100 hours as translators, transcreators, terminologists, localizers, proof-readers, revisers, editors, or project managers by January, 2022.

Project Examples
Requirements
Students can translate a wide range of topics including; Business, Advertising, IT, Politics, Medical, Legal, (possibly simulated), terminology, and project management jobs that professional translators usually do, under the supervision of a professional mentor. The mentor, a designated member of staff at your company, will assign the tasks to be done.
Translation and Proofreading include:
- English into the following European languages: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Russian
- English into Chinese
- English into Japanese
- Transcreation of advertisements
- Localization (translation of websites)
- All the above languages back into English
Additional company criteria
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Sign a learning agreement form.
Evaluation and feedback at the end of the placement period.
Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.
Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
