The media work based learning module at London Metropolitan University in London aims to prepare students for a career in the media industry. Students taking this module are in their second year of their undergraduate studies.

The module consists of a series of taught classes combined with work-based opportunities to be provided by external employers and organisations.

Students, individually or in groups, can be involved in a wide range of tasks and/or projects online and remotely depending on the skills and competencies they have developed during their undergraduate studies.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

The deliverables will be agreed before students take up a project and it will depend on their skillset and the nature of the project. For example, creating a promotional video content will have an outcome of a video or social media content will have outcome of written articles of agreed length and topic.

Project Examples

Requirements

Students will, individually or as a group, engage in work-based projects or activities of approximately 30-40 hours of work. Such projects or activities will have clear and defined outcomes and expectations, for example, the production of marketing material, videos, photography or online content appropriate for media or media-related industries.

Students can take and complete placement roles and projects during term time only:

  • Between 15th February and 30th April 2021
  • Placements should not exceed 40 hours of work

Basic design skills understanding design trends

Basic social media strategies: a Plan and campaign.

Basic web design and wordpress.org knowledge. Basic level Adobe CC, Illustrator, InDesign, Animate.

Basic level Research Skills and Basic User Testing

Basic Logo and branding work, understanding a clients brief and moving forward to client requirements from a brief.

Basic animation skills and basic html


BSc Media and Communications, BSc Media Communications and Journalism and BSc Media and languages.

  • Content creation for social media. Digital photographic reproduction and image manipulation.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

At the end of the project the company representative supervising the project will complete a short feedback on student/s performance.

Company is to communicate clearly what outcome they expect and agree project scope, particularly the number of hours, before the project commences.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
