Details

The main project is for a content writer and creator who can contribute to Spinning Forward's content by producing impactful and engaging stories that help our audience of aspiring 16 to 34 year-old online content creators in the Greater Toronto Area succeed. We are a local journalism company that covers issues important to 16 to 34 year old people of color who aspire to become content creators. We covers issues important to our audience in the real world like affordability, food insecurity, mental health and others as well as issues in the online world like comparison culture, burnout, financial inclusion and how to earn a living, online negative comments and many other topics.

Additionally, a writer and content creator will be curious, have great research skills and want to improve ther storytelling and writing skills. They also have an interest in issues like social justice, equity and diversity and financial inclusion for underrepresented and marginalized communities.

Embody Spinning Forward's approach to writing by sifting out the β€œnoise” from the 24-hour news cycle and telling news stories in a way that will resonate most with our readers, who are Gen Z and Millennials.

Bring a curiosity-driven mindset to your work.

One day you might be learning about a personal finance creator and the next you'll be covering how AI is changing how creators do what they do.

PLEASE REMEMBER:

We highly value lived experiences and strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of the qualications described.

Studies have shown that women, trans, non-binary people, and BIPOC are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualications as described in a job description. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive organization, and we are most interested in nding the best candidate for the job. That candidate may be one who comes from a background less traditional to our field of work, and we welcome the new insight such a candidate would provide.

Deliverables

You do not need formal journalism experience to write for us although a background is journalism is an asset. Instead, you enjoy writing and improving.

Produce stories alongside a senior writer for our newsletter and other content across our social media channels (as required).

Writing tasks will involve researching, writing and revising two short 500 to 750 articles on topics we provide or think about and come up together.

Mentorship

The supervisor will provide guidance, training, and feedback to support students in completing their assigned tasks and projects. They will offer clear instructions and resources, helping students understand the expectations and develop their hard skills. The mentor will regularly review their work, provide constructive feedback, and assist in problem-solving. They will foster collaboration, offer career advice, and motivate students, creating a supportive environment that promotes personal and professional growth throughout the internship.
