Reporter - Indigenous Women Leadership

Positions available: 4 We would like students to help us with creating content that is aligned with our vision, mission, and sector. We will ensure the student has a clear understanding of what these elements are for our organization. Alpha Woman is a media company that helps Alpha Women step into their power and optimize their lives physically, mentally, professionally and financially. We are seeking to comprehensively cover how Indigenous women are rising up to challenge colonialism, and heal. We are seeking to use our platform to help the world learn from and about Indigenous women leaders. We are looking for Indigenous content creators that can create content in the form of written content, video, audio content, special newsletter series or events or a combination of the aforementioned. To accomplish this, we expect the student(s) will: Assist in articulating an editorial strategy and calendar; responsible for assigned content creation aligned with strategy Write blog articles, email newsletters/sequences and other content pieces on assigned topics Publish their work on the Alpha Woman Wordpress CMS (training will be provided) Be a strong interviewer - much of our content is interview based Possess strong research and communication skills as well as the ability to put together a journalistic piece based upon the 5 "w"s Bring ideas for Alpha Woman coverage of Indigenous women leader to the table Ultimately, you will be working on editorial content creation for our organization, including interviews, researched articles, and video series. This student will have a byline on Alpha Woman and will create a portfolio of work for their resume. Students will also become part of the Young Alpha Intern cohort, with Interns from around the world as alumni. A student or team with excellent interview, writing and video skills would be the ideal candidate for this project.

Research and Data Analysis

We’d like students to help research and analyze data using Excel SpreadSheet – that will help us advocate for the return of medical foot care in the the city of Thompson as well as the Northern Region of Manitoba. The scope will include: The number of people aged 55 and older The number of people aged 55 and older who are Indigenous The number of people who have diabetes regardless of age in the region compared to the rest of the province The number of amputations due to diabetes The cost of amputations including medical, physiotherapy, prosthetics, and other factors The cost of providing medical foot care To compare the city and Northern Region data to the Province as a whole From this research and analysis we hope to build a strong case to present to the province of Manitoba for returning and expanding medical foot care in our region, not just for seniors, but also for those with diabetes. Potential sources of research information would be: Statistics Canada , Canadian Diabetes Association , Manitoba Government , and the Northern Regional Health Authority , and others as determined in their work.

Transcribing interviews and organizing qualitative data

Objective: The overall objective of this proposed project is to integrate Indigenous Knowledge and Western science in order to explore the promise of value-added fish products in Northern Manitoba. As part of this project we would require students to participate in: Transcribing Indigenous fishers' interview to word documents using Otter.ai platform Organizing the final word documents Assist in importing and organizing data into Dedoose software (qualitative analysis) For additional information see summary of the projects' objective below: Objective 1: To determine which fish species have been traditionally caught and used in Cree (Ininew/Inniniwak) communities in Northern Manitoba and to document Indigenous knowledge surrounding fish species with high potential value within these communities and to the South. Activities: Individual interviews have been conducted with total of 30 Elders and fishers in Misipawistik Cree Nation and the Métis community of Grand Rapids Interviews: The intent of these interviews were to identify and characterize: 1) the species and common names of fish caught by local fishers; 2) differences in fish species and quantity in summer and winter and how these numbers have changed over time and how they vary among communities; 3) the current appeal of these species and their cultural and likely nutritional value; 4) processing, preservation, and recipes for each species and associated value-added products; 5) changes experienced in local dietary habits around fish consumption, as well as, preferences and impacts on traditional livelihoods, notably changes in the quality of country foods; and 6) species and products that participants feel have high potential to be consumed by local Indigenous residents if given the opportunity. Quantitative data analysis: The interview transcripts will be coded into Dedoose software and any emergent themes will be identified and matched .
