TV Studio Summer Internship
Level UP: Skill Building, Workflow Development, and Content Creation Positions Available: 8 Students MacEwan University's Bachelor of Communication Studies launched their new Television Broadcast Studio in February 2020 shortly before the pandemic hit. Since then, they have been developing new curriculum, working with the local industry, and strategically establishing branding and identity for the benefit of their students as they develop fundamental skills and prepare to enter the workforce. There are multiple smaller components of this project that easily add up to hundreds of hours and can be completed over the course of several months. The summer portion of this internship runs for the months of July & August and student interns will have the opportunity to apply their skills to a wide range of production related project tasks. There are a wide range of projects to complete that can all be done remotely and will provide a wealth of experience for students as they develop critical skills, learn how a studio operates, and have their own input on the direction these new facilities will take. Example tasks to include: - Assisting in the creation and organization of a media repository with summer / quarter 3 content. This will include a wide range of assets such as the development of graphics like logos, lower thirds, overlays and backgrounds as well as recording podcasts, developing audio repositories with jingles, background music, and sound effects in addition to capturing stock footage, b-roll and more. Student interns will be given creativity opportunities to assist in building a content library for the TV Studio where they will be recognized and credited for their work. - Troubleshooting, testing, maintaining, and developing workflow strategies for a range of equipment including lights, cameras, controllers, switchers, and production hardware. The Studio can courier equipment to a students residence for remote work opportunities. By refining skills and better understanding equipment nuisances, student interns will be able to assist with learning both the possibilities and limitations of audio-visual equipment. - Learning, testing, developing and employing a range of audio and visual techniques that will assist in the development of new curriculum for future students. Through their access to equipment and mentorship, student interns will be able to utilize their above proficiency to also learn and apply industry standard methods and workflows, record their findings, and knowledge-share from their experiences. Once they've developed skills with a specific piece of equipment, they will be able to utilize it in combination with software tools to work on the media repository and other field production projects. - Assisting with the planning of circulation and scheduling of technology, editing time, and studio time as will benefit future curricular programing. By tracking time and developing workflow processes, student interns will be able to share their findings on how long it took them to document and complete specific tasks. The benefits of working on a project of this scope, to both student and employer, includes building confidence, working toward industry preparedness, developing cohesive team skills, learning to work in conjunction with a multi-faceted production environment, practicing time management, organization, and critical thinking skills. You will develop a philosophy that we “sink or swim together” as befitting of a production facility where everyone’s contributions are significant.
