MBA and Business Program Students - Financial sustainability for today's NGOs

For current employees, the Great Resignation has led to a greater willingness to leave traditional jobs for careers that offer greater personal fulfillment. This, in turn, has created a more competitive job market for recent graduates and soon-to-be graduates, who are seeking careers that align with their values and offer a sense of purpose. The nonprofit, charitable, and NGO (non-governmental organization) sector is one that has traditionally been attractive to individuals seeking purpose and fulfillment in their careers. The sector is characterized by a mission-driven culture and a focus on making a positive impact on society, which aligns well with the values and goals of many people looking for meaningful work. Careers in the nonprofit sector can also be challenging, as many organizations operate on limited budgets and have limited resources. This project aims to leverage student learnings, to provide greater resource stability and sustainability for mission-driven organizations.

Process Automation using Monday.com

We are looking to use Monday.com to build various automations within our organization. The rationale for this is as follows: As an organization supported by a 100% remote workforce, projects and workflows need to be transparent and easy to use. Monday.com has given us a grant license as a nonprofit organization - but this was after a careful review of several platforms including Jira, Notion, Trello and others. We are currently in our launch phase, and building relationships are of significant importance - and we don't anyone to get lost in the shuffle. We need clarity on who is doing what, when, and systematic sweeps to catch things before they fall through the cracks. We appreciate the opportunities that automation offers the Association to keep it both lean and nimble, to ensure that we can keep costs as low as possible for our members. This is a very high demand function for many organizations. We feel that this would be an excellent opportunity for students.

Accessibility in the Arts: CanAge

In Canada, many cultural institutions are still lagging when it comes to incorporating age-friendly design of not only digital properties like websites, but also built environments for temporary and fixed exhibition spaces. When form trumps function, this is not always the best scenario for Canada's aging population. It is well-established that older adults in Canada are broadly supportive of the arts through gifts of time, talent and dollars. CanAge is looking to build a program that will aid cultural attractions and institutions to become more age-friendly, dementia-friendly, and inclusive. As Canada continues to strengthen its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts through policy changes, the federal government has also allocated spending to arts and culture institutions to bring them fully up to speed, making this an excellent time to craft a regimented process and infrastructure to drive this change forward.

Disaster Response Guides for Canada's Older Adult Populations

In 2021, many parts of the country were still in pandemic lockdowns. Older adults were instructed to isolation, leaving many without access to healthcare or the ability to obtain food. In addition, residents of Canada's westernmost province, British Columbia, as the region experienced catastrophic conditions due to extreme heat, fires and floods. Please see this 7-part series from the Vancouver Sun: https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/fire-and-flood-bc-facing-two-extremes. The disparate response and lack of coordination between communities has been well-documented. As such, we are looking to obtain a differing perspective on disaster response, specifically from a US-based school program, as it relates to both the strategic design and the tactical response. We know that both community organizations and older adults themselves have a role to play, and the need for disaster preparedness education and planning is essential. We welcome the perspectives of the US Military.

This is to build on the success of an existing partnership with the Toronto Public Library , and will expand to include other public libraries in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, Markham, and Welland. The student(s) will be instrumental in curating both the campaign elements and a templated approach to creating consistent virtual experiences through these library engagements.

Attitudes on Healthy Aging in Canada: A National Survey of Canada's Seniors

As a part of our mandate, we regularly consult with seniors on a myriad of topics and also consult with a broader group of stakeholders to make well-informed, evidence-based recommendations to all levels of government to advance the rights and wellbeing of all Canadians as we age. Please see our policy book at canage.ca/voices However, these consultations have been generally been focused on one specific topic, and largely these conversations and perspectives have centred around COVID-19 and the impacts of the pandemic before, during, and after lockdown periods. We feel it's an excellent time for Seniors be broadly surveyed on a number of topics to best understand their attitudes on inflation, gasoline prices, housing, healthcare, environmental considerations and financial security - among others. Possible reference datasets (not including the Census 2021 data) from Statistics Canada, and other notable information from global sources has been included under "Resources & Files".

Training for Financial Institutions: Marketing, Monetization & Product Launch

CanAge has been awarded grant funding from ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development) to develop key training resources for financial institutions to better understand how to support older adult clients. Key topics include recognizing the signs of clients who are victims of frauds and scams and working with older adult populations who may be experiencing cognitive decline, dementia, etc. In 2021, the Canadian Bankers Association launched a voluntary code of conduct called Voluntary Commitments and Codes of Conduct Code of Conduct for the Delivery of Banking Services to Seniors, or more commonly known as, the Seniors Banking Code. SEE: https://cba.ca/Assets/CBA/Documents/Files/Article%20Category/PDF/vol-seniors-en.pdf The training has been developed for front line employees at banks, credit unions, investment firms and all types of financial institutions. We are looking to now monetize and market this program as the capacity-building component of our grant.

Engaging the older adult workforce - CanAge

CanAge is a Canadian partner to the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) on several initiatives, including their Living, Learning, and Earning Longer (LLEL) program. https://www.aarpinternational.org/initiatives/future-of-work/living-learning-and-earning-longer, which has international reach. As lifespans continue to extend, and people are at risk of outliving their retirement savings, CanAge is looking to engage Canadian employers in a meaningful way to bridge the gaps and barriers that exist for older adult workers who wish to work beyond the traditional retirement age of 65. We would love to engage several groups of students to consider the socio-economic impacts that an older workforce can bring to Canadian employers. A key part of our mandate is also to combat ageism, as many Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategies fail to address age as a factor. The intersection of age and other factors can disproportionately impact one's ability to learn, earn and thrive.

Website and Material Translation Project

In Canada, there are a growing number of languages that are spoken in homes and in communities. While the Census 2021 data is not yet available with updated information, the 2016 Census has provided indications of growth in several key languages including: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Russian, even though these may not be at the same pace. SEE: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/as-sa/98-200-x/2016010/98-200-x2016010-eng.cfm As an organization dedicated to advancing the rights and wellbeing of all Canadians as we age, we would also like to be as diverse and inclusive as possible. In addition to full translation in French, CanAge would appreciate the opportunity to work with translation students to also make its resources available in these other languages. Students may also have future opportunities to provide ongoing future translation of materials and website content.

LMS System - Security Sweep and Recommendations

CanAge is building out a training program for financial institutions (FIs) including banks, credit unions, financial planners, and other employees within this space. We've opted for an LMS suite that has the flexibility we need to scale our training offerings, but we want to ensure that we're able to apply the right kind of infrastructure and security to ensure that the environment is well-protected against attacks. We are not collecting a ton of data, but we will collect user data (names, emails, branch locations, etc.) and we want to be able to provide assurances to the FIs that their employee data is as safe as it can be. This project was funded through a grant from Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) through this solicitation. https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/Oca-bc.nsf/eng/ca02429.html Note: Data must be stored on Canadian-based servers.
